Achromatic Doublet Designer

Automated synthesis of a cemented achromat at infinite conjugates: element powers from the classic Abbe split φ₁ = φV₁/(V₁−V₂), then the remaining bending degree of freedom is optimized by exact ray tracing to minimize spherical aberration, while curvatures are rescaled to hold the target EFL with real thicknesses. Indices at F, d, C come from each glass's dispersion model.

How it works: the cemented constraint leaves one free shape parameter (c₁). For each trial bending the tool rebuilds the lens with auto center thicknesses, rescales curvatures so the thick-lens paraxial EFL hits the target exactly, then traces real marginal (1.0) and zonal (0.707) rays at d-line and minimizes Σ LSA² via golden-section search. An outer secant loop then retunes the element power split until the F and C foci of the thick system coincide — the classic thin-lens Abbe split alone leaves tens of µm of residual primary color once real thicknesses are included. What remains is the unavoidable secondary spectrum of the glass pair. Catalog nd/vd values are nominal — verify final designs against melt data.
